CONFIDENCE IN THE COURTROOM – 27 JULY 2018

Registrations Now Open

Registrations are now open for Confidence in the Courtroom, an interactive, full day advocacy workshop taking place from 8:30am to 5:00pm on Friday, 27 July 2018 in the Commonwealth Law Courts Building, jointly hosted by Queensland Young Lawyers (QYL) and FLPA.

For lawyers under 3 years PAE this is the perfect opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the courtroom and hone your advocacy skills. This event is also open to graduate lawyers who are yet to be admitted.

In Case You Missed It

The workshop will split up into two halves. The first half is interactive and will provide registrants with the opportunity to appear before Judge Jarrett in a busy mock Federal Circuit Court duty list, and to appear before Registrar Kane in a mock divorce hearing. Court materials will be provided to all registrants in advance to give them the opportunity to prepare for the hearings. Registrants will also have the opportunity to observe Counsel in a demonstration, before making their own appearances.

The second half of the workshop is observational and will allow registrants the opportunity to witness experienced Counsel run a contested interim parenting application before Justice Forrest, and a contested interim property application before Justice Carew. Registrants will also have the opportunity to observe solicitors instructing Counsel during the hearings. The hearings will take place in the Full Courtroom on Level 7 of the Courts to ensure all registrants will be able to observe both mock hearings.

Registrants will receive feedback on their appearances from the bench and from Counsel who will be on hand throughout the morning to provide guidance, including Mr Greg Shoebridge, Ms Karen Oakley, Ms Sarah Minnery and Mr Bruce Dodd.

Confidence in the Courtroom is an excellent opportunity to get to know your fellow early career lawyers, with opportunities for networking over morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea during the day. At the conclusion of the formalities, registrants will also have the opportunity to meet the Judges and Counsel who have generously volunteered their time to make this event happen over some canapes.

Places are strictly limited, so don’t miss your chance to get involved.
