The A - Z of Appeals

Appeals are an important part of all family law practitioners' practice, the outcome of such can be crucial for our clients.  Join our panel of appeal experts as they assist in navigating this often tricky and complex part of a family law practitioners practice. 

The panel will include:

  • Justice Kent of the Family Court;
  • Registrar Teresa Kane of the Family Court
  • Sydney Williams QC; Barrister-at-Law

The panel will provide practical and useful information about the appeal process, from start to finish.  This will include:

  • Practical tips and guidance as to seeking a stay, pending an appeal
  • Procedural matters about the filing of an appeal, including when leave is required and common applications in an appeal;
  • Substantive issues in appeals including drafting grounds of appeal, structuring summaries of argument and what is expected at the appeal hearing; and
  • Some practical insights as to the “dos and don'ts” at the hearing stage.

Rule 48(2) of the Queensland Law Society Administration Rule 2005 and the Bar Association of Queensland CPD Policy permit, on a self-assessment basis, the treatment of attendance at a conference as a CPD activity at the rate of 1 CPD point per 1 hour of attendance (excluding refreshment breaks).
