Family Law Junior Advocacy Workshop

Confidence in the Courtroom

Thursday, 19 October and Friday 20, October 2023

Registrations are now open for Confidence in the Courtroom, an interactive junior advocacy workshop taking place on 19 and 20 October 2023 in the Commonwealth Law Courts building, hosted by the Family Law Practitioners Association of Queensland, with an introductory session to be held two weeks in advance of the workshop itself.

For lawyers under 3 years PAE, this is the perfect opportunity to gain first-hand experience in the courtroom and hone your advocacy skills. This event is also open to graduate lawyers who are yet to be admitted.

This year’s workshop will consist of the following:

1.     an evening preparation session on Thursday, 5 October 2023 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm where the Honourable Justice Jarrett, Senior Judicial Registrar Anne-Marie Rice, Judicial Registrar Cartwright and Damien Greer will speak to participants about how to prepare for Court appearances;

2.     day 1 on Thursday, 19 October 2023 from 3:00pm to 5:30pm – participants will appear via Microsoft Teams for a mock first return date before a Judicial Registrar; and

3.     day 2 on Friday, 20 October 2023 from 10:30am to 4:00pm:

a.     in the morning, participants will appear in person at the Commonwealth Law Courts building before a Senior Judicial Registrar or Judge for mock interim hearings focussed on less complex interim issues which junior solicitors regularly face. Once the participants appear they will be provided with individual feedback from a senior mentor (experienced barristers and solicitors in practice) who observed their appearance;

b.     in the afternoon, participants will observe experienced Counsel appear in mock interim hearings on more complex parenting and property issues before the Honourable Justice Carew; and

c.      at the conclusion of the day, there will be a networking event for the participants to interact and meet the judicial officers, mentors and other participants in a social setting.

Further details about the workshop will be provided to registrants closer to the evening preparation session on 5 October 2023.  Court materials will also be provided to all registrants in advance to give them the opportunity to prepare for the hearings.  Electronic Court attendances can be arranged on 20 October 2023 for regional members who cannot attend in person.

Places are strictly limited and will sell out, so don’t miss your chance to get involved.
